Biography

Emilie brings experience and praxis in the making and teaching of design. Her research and teaching interests include Public Interest Design, Design-Build, Materials and Detailing.

Emilie is a leader in the design-build field and focuses on teaching students how to be better designers, makers, and citizens.

Through the Small Center, Emilie is able to guide projects and community partnerships that provide opportunities for faculty and students to engage real issues in the community through design. Welty’s recent design build studios include Grow Dat Youth Farm, LOOP, and the Big Class Writers’ Room.  Emilie also has a design firm in New Orleans with Seth Welty and Dan Etheridge called Colectivo. Together with Sarah Satterlee and Katie Nguyen they make stuff and do things.

A native of South Louisiana, Emilie's education includes a technical building background at the University of Southern Mississippi followed by a Masters Degree in Architecture at Tulane, and work with BILD design in New Orleans. Emilie is often leading or managing design build projects that make an impact in New Orleans neighborhoods. Beyond the sense of collective accomplishment, many of these projects embody, they also have received local and regional design award recognition.
