Academic Learning & Tutoring Center

The Academic Learning & Tutoring Center (ALTC) offers several services to support student success. We have trained peer tutors and writing coaches that hold online and in-person sessions. There are also trained SI Leaders, students who have done well in a class, who lead after-class group study sessions for many STEM courses. Be on the lookout for an announcement from your SI leader in class and on your course's Canvas page.

To make a writing or tutoring appointment, download the Penji app or go to penjiapp.com and log in with your Tulane email address and password.

The ALTC is in the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library Suite B01. The ALTC also serves as a vibrant space, equipped with dry erase board tables and a reservable podcast studio. Students can contact us at altc@tulane.edu or 504-314-7949.

William Edmondson: A Monumental Vision

This Spring, Newcomb Art Museum presents three distinct exhibitions. Each is independent, representing different themes that are carefully considered in relation to the museum’s mission to build upon its institutional legacy and highlight contributions of artists of the American South to the fields of art, craft, and design.

Legacy Traces: Recent Additions to the Museum Collection marks the campus debut of twenty-one works and considers how the museum’s acquisition practices have evolved in step with the institution’s growth and global trends in art. Victory Workers foregrounds representations of African American labor by artists of the twentieth century to reveal the contributions of under-recognized workers who serve within and beyond their respective communities. The traveling exhibition William Edmondson: A Monumental Vision offers an opportunity to engage the work of the renowned, twentieth century visionary artist and folk sculptor with an emphasis on the complex relationship between Black cultural production and American museums.

Academic Equity

The center’s staff, its campus partners, and foundational partners offer additional mentorship and support to help you prepare the academic, social, and professional skills needed to thrive on campus and beyond.

Join us for First Gen Fridays where we celebrate first-gen students. First-Gen Fridays is a monthly event series where we bring first-gen students together for free food and resources to help build a sense of community and a network of support for our first-generation college students. This event happens one Friday each month. Visit our website or WaveSync page for the dates and times for this semester’s First-Gen Friday offerings.

Equity Thursdays is a weekly conversation and lunch series hosted by the Center for Academic Equity (provided free of charge)! We offer workshops, presentations, and discussions led by members of the Tulane community and guests from the GNO area. Come for the free lunch from local vendors and stay for the information. Equity Thursday takes place in Richardson Building 115 every Thursday at 12:30pm. Follow CAE on Instagram (tulanecae) and WaveSync for updates about our weekly guests."

Study Abroad 101/202/303: The Why, The How, and The What Now? Every Tuesday through the semester we will present a targeted info session for students interested in study abroad. For our full schedule and exact times, please visit our WaveSync page.

Study Abroad 101: Why Study Abroad? - These sessions are similar to our orientation sessions and are aimed at first-year students who might want to study abroad or just want to learn more about our office

Study Abroad 202: How do I Study Abroad? - Meant for students getting ready to apply for a summer or semester, these sessions review the application process, finances, requirements, and more! We will occasionally collaborate with different academic departments for tailored sessions.

Study Abroad 303: What Now? - Meant for returnees, this info session will be a place to connect with other returned students, but also discuss the course equivalency process, timeline for grades posting, how to stay involved, and how to make study abroad a long-term career gain.

Newcomb Institute

Spring Grant Opportunities: Newcomb is offering grants for the fall to students seeking to engage in independent research, conference presentations/attendance, and/or community engagement with a gender focus.

Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) Seminar Grants: Newcomb pays for students to attend these seminars in Washington D.C., where they receive training for leadership in the public policy arena.

6:00 - 7:00 pm: Reception and exhibit of poster presentations by Newcomb Institute's Reproductive Rights and Reproductive Health inters, as well as advocacy activities provided by Tulane's many reproductive rights/health/justice student organizations.

7:00 - 8:00 pm: Annual Roe v Wade lecture delivered by Yasmin Lopez, CODMICA, "Territory and Body - Women Leading the Fight for Reproductive Rights in Latin America

Fellowships

A fellowship is a funding opportunity made available to their recipients to pursue:

• A degree program at the undergraduate or postgraduate level
• Independent research activities
• Experiential learning projects such as public service or teaching

Join us as we celebrate the opening of our three Spring exhibitions! The museum opens at 5pm for a preview, followed by a public talk at 6pm on William Edmondson by scholar Jennifer Marshall, PhD. Refreshments will be served following the talk.

Victory Workers Curator and Archivist Discussion
Exhibition curator Kendyll S. Gross will be in conversation with the Amistad Research Center and Xavier University of Louisiana’s Library Archives and Collections teams. They’ll discuss their respective collections and how they work to make them available to the public. The museum will be open late from 5:00 to 6:00pm in advance of this special program.

Donté K. Hayes: Future Artifacts
Donté K. Hayes, a featured artist in Legacy Traces, will discuss his practice as a ceramicist. The artist states, “Artifacts are a tangible history which have the capacity to retain, transform, destroy, erase and evoke lost knowledge.” The museum will be open late from 5:00 to 6:00pm in advance of this special program.

Crescent City Clay Connection
Newcomb Art Museum and Tulane’s Ceramics department is bringing together New Orleans based ceramicists. This is an opportunity to highlight the Crescent City’s clay culture. Come mingle and look at beautiful ceramic art! Light refreshments will be served.

Gathering Space
Throughout the Spring, one gallery will be used as a gathering space. We encourage visitors to use this space in a way that is meaningful to their visit, including for club meetings. We also welcome ideas for how it could be used, so please reach out to tfriel@tulane.edu to discuss!

Money Matters TU

Providing Tulane students with the knowledge and skills needed to make smart decisions regarding their finances. Money Matters TU is a two-part program consists of monthly workshops and CashCourse, a free online learning platform that teaches students important concepts related to financial literacy and wellness.

Senior Honors Thesis: The Honors Thesis is a two-semester independent academic project under the direction of faculty worth a total of 7 credit hours. It allows students to explore a question, test a hypothesis, or create a work of art, ultimately contributing original scholarship to the field in which the thesis is written. It provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to address questions that contribute to our local, national, and global communities from a range of disciplinary perspectives. College Scholars

The College Scholars program serves intellectually curious students looking to expand their academic horizons and build community with faculty and likeminded peers. Participants join Faculty Principal-led small group cohorts that focus on big questions and essential problems to solve. Though all College Scholars cohorts are designed to foster our three tenets of intellectual, social, and civic development, each group has a specific focus area aligned to faculty expertise and student interests.  

The 2024-25 College Scholars application is open until February 26, 2024. Applicants must be first-year students with a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA to be considered for admission.

The Research Network

The Research Network: The Research Network is a searchable database encouraging undergraduate involvement in the Newcomb-Tulane College research and creative community. Faculty members post current research assistantships that are available in their offices, and students can use the network to find and apply to the projects that interest them.
